Borneo Rainforest Lodge
I got picked up the next morning by a 4-wheel taxi from a café in Lahad Datu, and set out for the 2 ½ hour drive out to the BRL in the conservation area known as Danum Valley – in the taxi were already a British couple who were also going to stay for 2 nights, so we had a nice chat as we rode. As we got into the jungle the road go progressively worse with some serious mud holes, which our driver maneuvered through skillfully and carefully! We saw quite a lot of signs of elephants – fresh dung on the road and trampled vegetation where they have passed through. Unfortunately no elephants in sight!
As we finally reached the lodge we were glad to get out and stretch our legs and we were greeted by the staff with cool wash cloths, palm leaf leis and cold tropical fruit juice – as we were given a brief introduction to the program, our suitcases were brought to our chalets, and we got a chance to go freshen up before lunch. My chalet was situated about 5 minutes walk along the boardwalk close to the river, and it was beautiful – real luxury compared to my stay at the plantation, so I was pleased and looking forward to an exciting couple of days in the jungle living in style!
